Thinking outside the box: AWS signals a new era for storage
In this Breaking Analysis we’ll give you a brief overview of what we learned at AWS Storage Day, share our assessment of the big announcement of the day – a deal with NetApp Inc. to run its full ONTAP stack natively in the cloud as a managed service – and share some new data on how we see the market evolving. In some respects, this announcement reminds us of the VMware Cloud on AWS deal but applied to storage. In other words, if NetApp can take a page out of Snowflake Inc. and build an abstraction layer that hides the underlying complexity of not only the AWS cloud, but also Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, where you log into the NetApp data cloud and it optimizes your on-prem, AWS, Azure and/or GCP file storage, we see that as a winning strategy and NetApp just made a major coup toward that vision.

PayPal was forced to shift its approach to cloud infrastructure due to the pandemic
“Think of the hybrid cloud as both our on-premise infrastructure paired with our cloud infrastructure and think of multi-cloud as multiple cloud service providers that will provide our infrastructure for us,” explains Hummels on PayPal’s cloud strategy. “Supporting the cloud infrastructure on the on-premises data centers requires months of preparations in advance which is often the case during the holiday season, as the traffic is predicted and prepared beforehand. So, we would look at those handfuls of minutes and a handful of hours, where we were supporting huge transaction volume during the holiday season and we would ensure that had the capacity to support those transactions,” Wes dives deeper into the need for cloud, “Now that’s essential for the success of our customers but from a business perspective, it essentially created a situation where we had the infrastructure for sitting dormant for a lot of the year because it wasn’t utilized,” Shifting to the cloud helped the firm take advantage of the flex-up capabilities and ability of the cloud to burst workloads and transactions onto the cloud.
